Wangaratta off track

WANGARATTA Turf Club’s racetrack is set to close for almost a year to undergo a major renovation.
Nanjing Night Net

The $273,000 upgrade announced by Racing Victoria yesterday will include resurfacing works which will eradicate all poa annua and bent grass from the track.

It will be replaced with an improved kikuyu surface which can withstand the pressures of regular racing.

The project will also include the application of approximately 3000 cubic metres of sand which will help to level the track and improve its camber.

The track resurfacing works will commence following the club’s next meeting tomorrow week, with racing scheduled to resume on Melbourne Cup Day next year.

Club chief executive Paul Hoysted said he was grateful to receive funding assistance from Racing Victoria, Country Racing Victoria and Victorian Racing Industry Fund for the project.

“At present we have more than 130 horses working on the track each morning,” Hoysted said.

“This renovation, which complements the irrigation upgrade recently completed at the track, will place Wangaratta on a sound footing to continue to evolve into a major regional racing and training centre.

“The upgrade will allow the club to potentially hold extra race meetings, jump-outs and official trials which will assist the industry and bring benefits for the local community.

“The project will mean that a total of $3.5 million has been spent on training and racing infrastructure improvements at Wangaratta over the last four years.

“We’re looking forward to hosting a successful meeting on December 20 before the upgrade works begin.”

Wangaratta’s next five meetings have already been allocated to Benalla on January 2 and March 1.

Kyneton (January 13), Tatura (March 17) and Echuca (April 24) will also stage transferred meetings.

Wodonga and District Turf Club’s course is also set for a major makeover early next month.

The widening of the home straight from 14 metres to 18 metres and also improvements to the camber of the track will be part of the upgrade.

Gift your time to Vinnies this Christmas

St Vincent de Paul store manager Mary Nugent and conference president Tony Hergenhan are putting the call out for more volunteers to assist in both the clothing and furniture departments of the Bega store.
Nanjing Night Net

AT THIS time of year there is a growing demand for assistance in the Bega district for people who are doing it tough, and meeting these needs often depends on volunteer assistance.

St Vincent de Paul in Bega has put the call out for more volunteers.

Currently the store has 36 active volunteers ranging in age from around 50 to 89.

Helping out in the centre involves sorting through boxes of clothing, stocking the store, conducting interviews for those who require food vouchers and assisting in the furniture section.

“We especially are in need of more male volunteers, with a good strong back, for the furniture section as we have only two at the moment and when one is away no deliveries can be made or items picked up as two men are needed on the truck,” store manager Mary Nugent said.

Volunteers can be as young as 14 and with the school holidays about to start, this presents an opportunity for young people to get involved.

“Volunteers can have as many days as they want as long as they are prepared to do at least 20 hours per week,” Ms Nugent said.

The Christmas period is often the busiest time of year for charitable organisations such as Vinnies.

But according to conference president Tony Hergenhan, there has been a noticeable increase in the need for assistance throughout the entire year in the Valley.

“This year has been a real struggle for a lot of families,” he said.

Immediate assistance in the form of food vouchers, especially for Christmas, are available as well as vouchers for electricity and phone bills.

“It is really a case by case situation…some people just get so behind in life, for whatever reason, and it can become a bit hopeless for them.

“We also often refer people to other local organisations for assistance for things like mental health issues.”

Mr Hergenhan said three to four interviews a day is the norm, but yesterday they had eight interviews before lunch.

“I think this is due to the increase in electricity bills and general cost of living, plus rent expenses, not only in town but also it seems the outlying areas seem to be on the rise.”

Donations from the community to make Christmas special for local disadvantaged families are always needed.

Toys and food items are packed into hampers and distributed to people in need.

Last year the organisation handed out 40 hampers locally, with the majority going to families.

Donations to any of the local charities for Christmas hampers are most welcome.

Gifts for teenagers are often overlooked so any donation suitable for this age bracket would be greatly appreciated.

For further information or to offer volunteer assistance at St Vincent de Paul phone 6491 8550.

TAC urges safety message

Be present
Nanjing Night Net

BE present – that is the message from the Transport Accident Commission ahead of the holiday period.

Representatives from theorganisation were in Bendigo on Tuesday to promote the importance of road safety and urge motorists to take caution when travelling during the festive season.

Research from the TAC bureau showed fatal collisions during the Christmas period tended to involve a greater proportion of rural locations, high-speed zones and single vehicle crashes.

Bendigo resident Jason Sleep was involved in a serious motorcyclecollision in 2001 and knows all too well the importance of taking caution while driving.

Mr Sleep is now a paraplegic and double amputee. He said motorists needed to abide by the road laws.

“We want people to get there in one piece,” hesaid.

“Slow down, don’t drink and drive or do drugs, don’t speed. Motorists should access risky behaviour.

“Take your time, we don’t want to drum it into people but it’s important.”

Mr Sleep said risky driving could lead to serious injury or death.

“There is no going back if you get to where I am,” Mr Sleep said.

Five people died on Bendigo roads in the 12 months to December 9, the same as the previous12 months.

In Central Goldfields, three people lost their lives in the same period.

TAC chief executive Janet Dore said the most important gift central Victorianscould give their loved ones this Christmas was their presence.

“Tragically, the season also brings about higher numbers of passengers, women and children under 15 years of age being killed in crashes,” Ms Doresaid.

“The power to be present rests in the hands of every road user.

“Whether you’re a car or truckdriver, a motorcyclist, a pedestrian, a passenger or a cyclist, we all have a role to play and mustwork together to share this important message.”

Horsham Rural City Mayor Mark Radford launched the initiative yesterday.

He said people could access the service on any Wi-Fi enabled device at eight access points across the city, including Firebrace Street, Roberts Place, Roberts Avenue bus station, Horsham and Grampians Visitor Information Centre and May Park.

Cr Radford said the service would be available at the soundshell in January.

‘‘The project is part of the city’s digital and wireless strategy with the purpose of building a network that puts Horsham on the map and offers almost the same standard of connectivity seen in larger cities around the world,’’ he said.

Cr Radford said council and Horsham businesses set up the service.

Council ICT co-ordinator Vincent Liao said residents and visitors could use the service by connecting to Horsham-FREE-Wi-Fi network on their device.

‘‘Users can then access useful information such as accommodation, restaurants and transportation on the landing page without data limits or connect to the internet with data limits,’’ he said.

Mr Liao said the data limit was 100 megabytes a day.

‘‘The free service has a family-friendly filter and data limits will help reduce the risk of the service being misused or abused,’’ he said.

He said people could visit hrcc.vic.gov.au for a map of the coverage area.

The definitive book about our famous Blowhole Point

Grahame Mackie with Blowhole Pioint, the subject of his latest book, in the background. Picture: GEORGIA MATTSWELL-KNOWN Kiama historian and author Graham Mackie has launched his long-awaited book The Blowhole Point.
Nanjing Night Net

Mr Mackie said thebook had been a labour of love, writtenover eight months.

He said he had been excited to find so many incredible stories that had either never been told or were scattered in different places.

“It has been an attempt to consolidate the interesting and sometimes controversial and long forgotten events into one compilation that records the changes that have taken place and the people involved,” Mr Mackie said.

“In fact, the Blowhole Point has been the focal point for almost everything that has taken place in Kiama.

“From the tsunami that created the blowhole, the cedar getters that supplied a growing Sydney, the sailing schooners that took first the cedar, then produce from butter and bacon, to blue metal.

“The growth of quarrying that was Kiama’s main livelihood for almost a century, followed by fishing and today tourists.”

In his foreword to the bookKiama Mayor Brian Petchlerconfirmed Blowhole Point hadplayed a significant and important part in local history, both before European settlement and since George Bass.

Bass said ‘the point mirrors the changing nature of the area.’

“Readers will find it a great read and it will answer many of the matters they have wondered about,” Mr Mackie said.

The book is for sale at Kiama Library and Kiama Visitors Centre for $30.

It complements his 2011 The Chronology of Kiama – 1770-2011and his mother Molly Mackie’s book My Kind of Town Revisited
