Lyon’s share of success due to the Cherry Flicker

Australia’s Nathan Lyon, left, appeals for a LBW decision to umpire Ian Gould, right, during the third day of their cricket test match against India in Adelaide, Australia, Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014. Australia declared their fist innings at 517 for 7. Photo: James Elsby. It started as a throwaway line by Quentin Hull, and is now taking the town of Young NSW by storm. Or should that be, like a Cherry Bomb?

On Day 4 of the First Test against India at the Adelaide Oval, all eyes were onNathan Lyon as he was smack bang in the middle of a purple patch with first innings figures of five for 134.

Online comments havedescribedit as Lyon’s best form, and by lunch time, his name was the third highest trending term on Twitter in Australia.

A key ingredient of Lyon’s success has been a new delivery he has been working on with Muralitharan, where he flicks the ballwith his finger.

And so the ABC’s Quentin Hull began to muse…

… since Nathan Lyon is fromYoung

…and since Young is known for it’s Cherry Festival

… and since the local league team is called the Cherrypickers

… then surely Lyons signature delivery should be called the CHERRY FLICKER.

The logic is undeniable, and the termis as catchy as a poorly timed snick to second slip.

Shane Warne hadthe slider and the zooter. And now Nathan Lyon has the Cherry Flicker. And with that thetown of Young (not to mention much of the Indian batting lineup) was bowled over.

Former Young and District Cricket Association president Scott Druett and one of Lyon’s good mates was thrilled at the idea of the Aussie spinner’s new delivery being named the Cherry Flicker.

“I think it’s awesome,” he said.

“I haven’t heard that one before!

“It’s great to see a local make it and it will give the town a bit of recognition, and highlight where Nath’s from.”

— cricket老域名出售.au (@CricketAus) December 12, 2014He was just as happy to hear Lyon had just taken five wickets.

It’s been a tremendous performance by the unassuming country born player and has gone some way towards shifting cricketing minds from the inevitable sadness and sense of loss from the passing of that other country cricketer, Phillip Hughes.

There remains a day and two sessions in the test, but it’s a pretty good chance we’ll see the Cherry Flicker again.
